One step forward, two steps back

After my cross training excercise last week I began to expeiriance pain around my knees and upper shins. The pain continued and did not subside with easy walking or low training days, so upon doing some research and talking with others, my very unprofessional diagnosis is that I likely have shin splints. From what I have read it is best to stay off of road excercises, and anything including running or jumping. Most often this injury is the cause of sudden impact to your shins and knees from either pounding the pavement while running, or from jumping. Both of which I have done lately. So I am going to take a week off. This really frustrates me, and I'm not sure where or how to even begin back.
Do I start off where I stopped?
Do I start over,?
Do I go even slower?
During this week of rest I plan on not sitting around. I will be working on other parts of my body that do not require using my legs.
Stop. Rest. Start again.
